Washington D.C. (AHN) - U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday signed into law a bill that authorizes the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to continue its practice of interrogating terrorism suspects and their prosecution for war crimes. It comes just six weeks after the President acknowledged the presence of secret detention facilities abroad. Since then, the leader has pressed Congress to quickly give authority to try the suspects in military commissions.

Under the new law, the defendants get protection from the blatant abuse by the interrogating officials, but still their rights to challenge detention remain restricted.

At a White House ceremony, the president said the law is crucial for the CIA "to continue to question terrorists and save lives", adding that "it complies with the spirit and letter of the U.S.'s international obligations".

A Supreme Court ruling in June that said setting up of military tribunals to prosecute detainees at Guantanamo Bay violated U.S. and international law.

Terming the law as "one of the most important pieces of legislation in the war on terror," President Bush assured that the Military Commissions Act of 2006 would save several American lives.

A White House spokesman said preparations would now begin to try Guantanamo suspects.

The U.S. Defense department has laid charges against 10 detainees and is preparing to charge about 65 more.

The legislation was passed by both houses of Congress in September after intense debate.
