Crude oil climbs over $60 as OPEC weighs reduction

NEW YORK: Crude oil rose above $60 a barrel Monday as OPEC officials said that the group might reduce output at a meeting next month and after an attack on a production facility in Nigeria, the largest oil producer in Africa.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries may restrain supplies further at the meeting, Saudi Arabia's oil minister, Ali al-Naimi, said. An Eni flow station in the Niger Delta was "unharmed" after an attack, the company's Agip unit said Monday. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, has threatened to attack oil facilities.

"OPEC is taking steps to keep prices from falling and there is a great deal of geopolitical risk out there," said Bill O'Grady, director of fundamental futures research at A.G. Edwards & Sons in St. Louis, Missouri. "These two factors will keep a floor on prices."

Crude oil for December delivery rose 88 cents to close at $60.02 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Futures have traded in a range of $56.55 to $61.79 for the past month.

"If we have to cut in the next meeting, we will," Naimi said during an interview in Islamabad. "Remember, the objective of what we're trying to do is to bring back the market into balance and equilibrium."

OPEC ministers agreed at a meeting in Qatar last month to reduce oil output by 1.2 million barrels a day to stem a three-month slide in prices. The cuts took effect Wednesday. OPEC is next scheduled to meet in Abuja, Nigeria, on Dec. 14.
