-Caveat Lector- Bombing for Dollars? Newsday's Alvin Bessent smells a rat behind the recent relaxation of U.S. trade restrictions on pharmaceutical supplies against rogue states like the Sudan. "Marketing opportunities there got a huge boost in August when the United States, in a righteous huff over terrorist attacks on U.S. embassies in Africa, used cruise missiles to take out the local competition," notes Bessent in the paper's usually Clinton-friendly "Asides" column. Bessent reports that even respected American scientists have now concluded that the pretext for bombing Sudan's Al Shifa pharmaceutical factory was completely bogus. White House National Security spinmeister Sandy Berger had unconvincingly contended for months that the Clinton CIA had solid evidence the plant was making deadly nerve gas components. "Now with a nudge from pharmaceutical and farm lobbies that give generously to political campaigns," Bessent writes, "Bill Clinton has decided that relaxing sanctions enough to allow them to sell food and drugs to nations suspected of supporting terrorism is the right thing to do." "Actually, it is," concludes the writer. "But certainly in this new world order, where free trade is king, there must be some rule against bombing your way into a larger market share." Inside Cover extends get well wishes to Mr. Bessent's liberal Newsday colleagues, like editorial page editor Jim Klurfeld and Clinton butt-girl columnist Marie Cocco, who must have keeled over when they read Bessent's common sense appraisal of the White House's shenanigans in Sudan.
