ed more than 50,000 natural & synthetic substances have found a fungus comp-
ound that acts like insulin, raising hopes that diabetics in the future may
take pills instead of shots. Scientists at Merck Research Labs isolated the
insulin-like compound from a fungus found in Congo jungles. When tested on
diabetic mice, it significantly lowered sugar in the animals' blood. The
compound is a mimic of insulin, the natural hormone that allows the body to

*** Pope's historic Romania tour. VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope John Paul II will
break through another iron curtain when he begins a 3-day trip to Romania,
the first papal visit to a state where Orthodox Christians predominate. Not
since the Great Schism of 1054, when the Eastern church split from Rome, has
a pope made such a trip. The Vatican attaches particular symbolic importance
to it. "We're talking centuries here; the overused word 'historic' certainly
applies," said a papal spokesman. The Vatican, with big things in mind, has

who once officially proclaimed Rolling Stones Day in Minnesota, refused to
sign a proclamation making Thursday a day of prayer. Ventura broke with the
practice of his predecessors, who proclaimed prayer days in conjunction
with a National Day of Prayer. "I believe in the separation of church and
state," Ventura said. "We all have our own religious beliefs. There are
people out there who are atheists, who don't believe at all. They are all
citizens of Minnesota and I have to respect that." The Minn. Family Council
criticized Ventura's decision, saying the prayer proclamation dates to 1795,
when President George Washington declared a day of public thanksgiving and

*** La Nina-tornado link eyed. (AP) - Oklahoma's catastrophic tornadoes were
influenced by La Nina, a weather phenomenon 5,000 miles west of the prairie
in the Pacific Ocean. It's in the same widespread weather trend that dumped
a record 91 feet of snow on Mt.Baker in Washington this winter and triggered
severe drought & wildfires in Florida. La Nina refers to a large, unusually
cold pool of water in the equatorial Pacific Ocean that develops every few
years and influences weather patterns world-wide. It works in reverse of the
more common & better-known El Nino, a warming of Pacific waters. La Nina has
generated a stronger, colder jet stream in the upper atmosphere, while warm,
wet air at lower levels has been pulled from the Gulf of Mexico into the
