-Caveat Lector- TAINTED BLOOD SCANDAL BIG NEWS, IN CANADA ========================================= (CNNS, 05/07/99) -- A Canadian source assures this news service that what is known in Canada as the "tainted blood scandal" is very big news there. Our Canadian source also says the scandal is being effectively censored from mainstream news outlets here in the U.S. And that seems beyond dispute: Have *you* heard much of anything about the Canadian Tainted Blood Scandal? What seems to have happened was that, in the 1980s, blood was collected from high-risk donors in prisons in Arkansas and Louisiana. Since many prisoners have histories of needle-drug abuse; since homosexual anal rapes and "consensual" male-to-male sex are routine in U.S. prisons; both factors lead to prison blood donors being less than ideal candidates for donating blood. The blood donated by these prisoners was not allowed to be distributed in the U.S. So, in a typical practice of dumping unsafe products on foreign markets, the prisoners' blood was sold to Canada. Blood purchased from prisoners in Arkansas and Louisiana for $7/pint was sold at immense profit on the open market, according to several reports. Since then, over a thousand cases of AIDS and Hepatitis-C in Canada have been linked to the dumping there of the tainted prison blood. According to a report in Salon magazine (2/25/99), "A group of Canadian hemophiliacs who say they contracted hepatitis C and HIV from contaminated blood plasma originating in Arkansas and Louisiana prisons during the 1980s journeyed to Washington Wednesday to demand a criminal investigation by the United States Department of Justice into the scandal. Department officials did not immediately respond. The Canadians are asking why certain American prison systems, including one in Grady, Ark., during then-Gov. Bill Clinton's tenure, continued to export plasma long after the sale of such products had ceased inside the U.S. itself." A fiction-based-on-fact book, "Blood Trail," takes what is known about the scandal and expands on the theme. One review of author Michael Sullivan's (pen name) book describes how it "is all sickeningly, utterly true.
