My semi-rural region [Sonoma County, north of San Francisco] has about
350k people - and the Yellow Pages list 65 entries under CHURCHES. Not
65 churches - 65 different RELIGIONS, sects, denominations - Baha'is,
a half-dozen flavors of Baptists, 3 breeds of Buddhists, 3 kinds of
Catholics [including those with a Matriarch instead of a Pope], various
sects of dissident Mormons, New Agers, varied Orthodoxoi, et al - and
this enumeration neglects those that're hiding out in the hills, with
unlisted numbers. My old ATLAS OF HAWAII lists about 60 distinct sects
of Buddhists in the islands, and that was a dozen years ago. Anywhere
one looks in Murka there are zillions of religious factions, and they've
been metastasizing ever since the Puritans landed. And some folks start a
new religion every week or two, just to stave off boredom. Fun fun fun.
