Anglican-Roman Panel Nears Agreement
LONDON (AP) -- Roman Catholics and Anglicans are closer to agreement on the
sensitive issue of authority in the church following the release of a new
statement from a joint commission, Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey said
Wednesday.
The report, called ``The Gift of Authority,'' was prepared by the
Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission, which was created to study
issues dividing the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church,
including the role of the papacy.
``No doubt there will be several issues ... which will be questioned,
critically evaluated and examined closely by both communions. This is how it
should be,'' Carey said.
``We are on a journey together and are close enough now to make further
progress based on significant theological agreements over the last 30
years.''
The Church of England broke away from Rome in the 16th-century Reformation,
and the monarch was made supreme governor of the church.
Dialogue on healing the breach began 30 years ago, but differences in some
cases have widened -- notably in the decision by the Church of England and
about half of the affiliated national churches to ordain women as priests.
Three Anglican bodies, in the United States, New Zealand and Canada, have
consecrated women bishops.
The Roman Catholic doctrine of papal infallibility, proclaimed in the 19th
century, also has posed difficulties.
On the question of the authority of the pope, the report says that the
``specific ministry of the universal primate ... is a gift to be received by
all the churches.''
The report said that authority does not reside only in the figure of the
universal primate.
``Since it is the faithfulness of the whole people of God which is at stake,
reception of teaching is integral to the process,'' the report said.
