Probably a case of your teachers wishing to ingrain the habit of washing
your hands, and so they said something like "You have to wash your hands,
or else you'll get the plague!"

I remember 'The Plague' being the generic bugaboo that was held up as the
result of one:  not washing their hands, not covering their mouth and
nose when sneezing, sticking something in one's mouth if it had fallen to
the ground, sharing someone's comb, swimming in the polluted river, etc.

Hardly the same thing as 'being taught' about the real causes of
plague...I think you must have been sleeping thru biology class...
