SERBS POSITIONING TROOPS FOR GROUND WAR; NO BOMBS HAVE DROPPED ON BELGRADE
SINCE CHINA EMBASSY
Anticipating that NATO may soon launch a ground war, Yugoslav army brigades
have been stationed along likely attack routes from Macedonia and Albania
and are trying to fortify the border, the NEW YORK TIMES is reporting in
Wednesday editions.
"Sealing the border with Macedonia has become a top priority of the Serbian
military," Michael Gordon reports in a story filed from Brussels.
"Yugoslav army troops have been laying mines, trying to block attack routes
from Skopje and Kumanov in Macedonia."
Meanwhile, NATO warplanes have dropped no bombs on downtown Belgrade since
the attack on the Chinese Embassy 11 days ago, and allied officials suggest
that the pause could become permanent.
The LOS ANGELES TIMES is planning a Page One on the skies that have turned
quiet.
U.S. and NATO officials tell the paper that NATO has already inflicted
"considerable damage to top targets in the center of the city" and may not
need to "conduct further strikes in an area that is congested and filled
with sensitive civilian and diplomatic sites."

ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT SLAMS TAB, BUT PLANS TO SHOW CARSON STALKARAZZI PHOTOS
On Tuesday PARAMOUNT's ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT took an on-air shot at the
NATIONAL ENQUIRER for its coverage of Johhny Carson's health crises. But
on Wednesday, ET plans to show pictures taken of Carson -- pictures turned
down by the NATIONAL ENQUIRER because they were taken by stalkarazzi!
"They are May Sweeps hypocrites," a well-placed ENQUIRER source charged
Tuesday night.
"Criticize us over our Carson coverage? And then they go and show
stalkarazzi photos we turned down?"

MAN WAVING GUN GOES TO SHEARER'S HOUSE AFTER 'HARDBALL' INTERVIEW WITH
WILLEY, ARREST SAID TO BE IMMINENT

A man went to the home of Cody Shearer and waved a gun on Sunday, the
DRUDGE REPORT has learned. And police may soon make an arrest in the
incident, according to officials.
The suspect is said to be the son of a prominent Washington figure; the
investigation is being handled at high levels.
No one was seriously hurt in the incident, but officials suspect the man
may have moved into action after Shearer was named in a nationally
televised interview as the one who confronted and spooked presidential
accuser Kathleen Willey just days before she gave testimony in the Paula
Jones case.
There are said to be multiple witnesses to the gun-waving incident... MORE
While interviewing Willey on his CNBC program, host Chris Matthews
indicated she had told him that Cody Shearer [brother-in-law of Deputy
Secretary of State Strobe Talbot] was the man who confronted her outside of
her Richmond home.
According to Willey, the man who approached asked about her missing cat,
her tires that had been slashed and her children, by name, and questioned
whether she was getting the message.
Last week after the Matthews interview the DRUDGE REPORT revealed exclusive
details on how ABC NEWS reporter Jackie Judd first showed Willey a picture
of Shearer -- a picture Willey told Matthews was a match.
Shearer tells Joe Conason of SALON in an interview: On the date cited by
Willey, Jan. 8, 1998, Shearer was far from Willey's house -- and Shearer
says he can prove it!
"[Shearer] can prove that he stayed at the Hyatt Regency hotel in San
Francisco on the night of Jan. 7 and that at 2:53 p.m. on Jan. 8, he
withdrew money from a cash machine at the Embarcadero Center in that same
city, Conason reports.
"In fact, he can show that he flew to Los Angeles before Christmas 1997 and
didn't return until Jan. 11, 1998, the day Willey testified in the Jones
case. By chance, he sat next to former Secretary of State Warren
Christopher on the UNITED AIRLINES flight back
east."
By strange coincidence, Shearer ran into Matthews at the Philadelphia
Amtrak station last weekend and strongly disputed claims made on HARDBALL.
CNBC's Chris Matthews apologized on Monday's broadcast.

STAR WARS SETS OPENING RECORD, BEFORE OPENING
Using figures provided by FOX and movie chains -- STAR WARS will generate
$42 ton $45 million in gross ticket revenue on Wednesday -- making it the
biggest blockbuster opening ever.
The film will pull in more than $6 million an hour during day prime
showings on Wednesday.
Figures are based on how many tickets have already been sold.

Streisand took President Clinton for a walk in her garden - and gave him a
bunch of roses to take to the White House for his wife.
Clinton visited Streisand and husband Brolin in Malibu on Sunday morning,
very privately, with no other guests.
They strolled in the garden, where Streisand has many rosebushes, including
a rose named after her that is going on the market next year.
The president took back to Air Force One a bouquet of those Barbara blooms,
especially for Hillary, if she ever comes home.
