Cattlemen angry as state foots $6m buffalo bill

BUFFALO, which by the beginning of this century had been hunted almost to
extinction, have returned in such numbers that the market for their meat is
saturated and the US Government is bailing out ranchers.
The Agriculture Department is spending $6 million (£3.75 million) this year
buying up a quarter of the ground bison meat production. The surplus meat is
being given to nutritional programmes for Indians, whose way of life once
revolved around following the herds as they roamed across the great plains.
The move has incensed cattle farmers because the Government is paying twice
the price of ground beef for the excess produce. Furthermore, they regard
buffalo ranchers such as Ted Turner of CNN as rich men who have reintroduced
the creature as a novelty to amuse themselves. There are now about 250,000
bison across America, mainly in private herds. Mr Turner, vice-chairman of
Time Warner, has 17,000 bison on ranches in Montana and elsewhere and the
national population is believed to be increasing at the rate of 20 per cent
a year.
This is a remarkable recovery from 100 years ago when only a few hundred
bison, commonly known as buffalo, remained on the continent. At the
beginning of the 19th century there were more than 60 million. Pioneers
described stampedes of the beasts in countless numbers.
The Union Pacific railway brought hunters who shot the animals in their
thousands from the comfort of luxury carriages.
