To keep the energies of the people directed toward religious mysticism --
instead of political action in the real world. No doubt all the Roman
Emperors from Constantine onward --and their intelligentsia, Greek
Neoplatonic syncretists and Roman ethical Stoics like Paul's friend Seneca--
had the same agenda when transforming the radical social critique of the
Liberator (that's actually what "Savior" means, folks) into a "slave
morality" (Nietzsche's description) better serving the elite as Rome's STATE
religion.
