-Caveat Lector- US FORCES READY TO GO IN: FIRST WAVE COULD ENTER ON THURSDAY; ALL TO BE IN PLACE IN 5 DAYS With a Yugoslav military withdrawal imminent, nearly 7,000 U.S. troops are set to join the 48,000-soldier NATO in a move over the Kosovo border. *1,900 U.S. marines on ships in the Aegean are to begin landing at Salonika, Greece, at daybreak Thursday, Pentagon officials tell the NY TIMES. [The marines will then drive north into Macedonia to staging areas near its capital.] *1,700 U.S. soldiers, AH-64A Apache helicopters, tanks and artillery now in Albania will begin moving overland into Macedonia at first light on Thursday. *An advanced Army command unit with 200 troops is to fly overnight to Macedonia. *All the U.S. forces should be in place within five days. The troops will have to "find and disarm miles of land mines and rebuild dozens of recently bombed bridges and roads," the WASHINGTON POST is reporting in Thursday editions. The paper also reports that NATO and U.S. officials are hoping to turn the young, brash leaders of the KLA rebel force into a new "3,000-strong police force."
