For example, instead of the normal classroom atmosphere with a drill instructor walking the new soldiers through the parts of a rifle by the numbers, trainees were simply given rifles and told, "Take them apart and put them back together." I've never been clear as to whether this worked--especially considering that the rifles involved were M-1s. By about 1955, however, the Bundeswehr had abandoned *innere Führung* and returned to the traditional *Kadavergehorsamkeit*, "corpse-like obedience," that had always characterized German armies.
