The Communist Death Toll
People fond of castigating the United States for supporting authoritarian
and totalitarian but non-Marxist leaders can never seem to bring themselves
to speak ill of communist regimes although they are far more repressive.
Just how repressive is revealed in a study by R.J. Rummel, professor of
political science at the University of Hawaii. He says that the number of
people killed by communist or totalitarian goverments already approximates
the number that might be killed in a nuclear war. And it far exceeds the
number of people killed in two world wars plus all the civil wars since the
beginning of the century, he states.
Rummel's research shows communist governments have killed 95.2 million
people. The two world wars killed 24 million and the Vietnam War 1.2
million.
These figures, Rummel says, do not include the 27 million deaths during
the 1958-1961 famine on the Chinese mainland or the 4 million who died in
the 1921-1922 Soviet famine.
