Fascism [< Latin 'fasces', "bundle of sticks"]: a political system which is authoritarian, highly centralized, and nationalistic, often including regimentation of the individual, a quasi-military social structure, and state control and/or ownership of the major sectors of economic production. When capitalized, refers exclusively to the Corporatist system founded by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Nazism [< Ger 'Nazionalsozialist', "National Socialist"]: a fascist system characterized by intense anti-Marxism and intense antisemitism, within a strongly paramilitary structure. When capitalized, refers exclusively to the Nazionalsozialistische Deutscher Arbeiterpartei, the National Socialist German Workers' Party, led by Adolf Hitler from 1920 to 1945, and to the culture of race hatred and racial supremacy promulgated by that party, particularly during the period of its ascendancy in Germany, 1933 to 1945. Holocaust [< Gk 'holocaustos', "burned sacrifice"]: the attempted extermination of the Jewish people by the Nazis under Adolf Hitler, in particular referring to the concentration-camp system borrowed by the Germans from the British. ================================= Robert F.
