(That's a paraphrase from a Newsweek review of Hugh Schonfield's *The Passover Plot*.) Historians are expecially susceptible to this problem. Even a cursory review of events will show you that the course of world history is determined as much as anything by small groups of collaborators, who might as well be called conspirators. Everywhere you look, these small elites appear, some more obvious than others. It becomes very tempting to assume that one or another of these elites is THE elite, the innermost Power, the Hidden Hand that guides history. And if you don't particularly like any of the existing elites, then it's easy to make up your own--in this case, to identify the Hidden Hand with the "space brothers." Oh, I'm sure he believes it; but it's no more credible than von Däniken. That he's a reputable scholar just shows that scholars are all too human. Historiography (the history of history) is replete with bizarre theories and interpretations of events by top-notch scholars who occupied the pinnacle of their profession. Has anyone been able to replicate his results? I sincerely doubt it. Bob ================================= Robert F.
