$558m lure for expat scientists

STORY: BEIJING: China will spend 600 million yuan (HK$558
million) over the next three years on grants to lure overseas
Chinese scientists to help its modernisation drive.

The program, which Xinhua News Agency said was China's largest
ever government-funded recruitment scheme, aimed to draw 300
overseas Chinese scientists to conduct research at the Chinese
Academy of Sciences.

The scientists would be given research grants of two million yuan
to work on China's US$602 million (HK$4.70 billion) National
Innovation System scheme to promote science and technology to
support economic development, Xinhua said.

Candidates would be required to have a doctorate and be less than
40 years old.

China's efforts to acquire technology have come under close
scrutiny in the United States amid allegations Beijing
systematically pilfered US nuclear weapons and other military
secrets for years.

China has vehemently denied the allegations, arguing that it had
developed and tested its first nuclear weapon and built a
satellite launch program based solely on domestic technology. -
