SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BOOKS ONTHE ROCKEFELLER FAMILY AND THEIR
PHILANTHROPIES
Compiled by the Staff of The Rockefeller Archive Center

INTRODUCTION

The following bibliography is designed to present an introduction to the
literature about the Rockefeller family and their various business and
philanthropic endeavors. It is meant as a starting point for general
readers and beginning scholars. It is by no means a
comprehensivebibliography of works that mention the Rockefellers - it
includes only books and not articles found in newspapers, magazines or
scholarly journals, for example, and books in which the Rockefellers are
mentioned but are not central figures also have been excluded. Although
this list emphasizes books prepared by professional historians, works
have not been excluded on the basis of their points of view.

In addition to these books, the Rockefellers have been the subjects of
numerous articles in newspapers and magazines throughout the past
century. Some of this literature is contained in the Periodical
Literature series in Record Group 13, Public Relations, in the
Rockefeller FamilyArchives; a chronological bibliography of this
periodicalliterature is available for consultation at the
RockefellerArchive Center.

The compilation of the bibliography presented here was begun by Joseph
W. Ernst, the Rockefeller family archivist and first director of the
Rockefeller Archive Center, and the late J. William Hess, archivist for
the Rockefeller Foundation and Associate Director of the Rockefeller
Archive Center. The current staff of the Archive Center is pleased to
continue their work and to make it more readily available on-line.
