The Clintons' Gall

Is it just us? Doesn't anyone care that the president and first
lady think the American people are stupid? They must, given their
recent spate of public pronouncements.
Take President Clinton's plea Tuesday to save Medicare by asking
women to oppose the Republican tax cut.
''I ask you to help me send the word to the Congress that let's
do first things first. Let's fix Medicare. The women of America
especially need it,'' he said at the White House. His wife joined
him at the dog-and-pony show.
Here's their logic. Because women live longer, they use Medicare
more. Plus, women generally get more medical care than men.
Therefore, ''if this tax cut passes, there will be breathtaking
cuts in every area of our national life that you would believe
was important,'' said Clinton.
Clinton thinks the way to fix Medicare is to throw more money at
it. He doesn't want any real changes to the program because he
says it'll hurt women.
But what about the women today who can't find a doctor who takes
Medicare patients? And how about the women today who're kicked
out of hospitals because their Medicare funding ran out?
And the women who are denied treatment because Medicare won't pay
for it? What will making Medicare solvent for 10 more years do,
except delay the inevitable collapse?
What makes Clinton's deception all the more galling is that he's
making this pitch to women. In case anyone's forgotten, his
regard for women is what got him impeached. He's shown he cares
not one whit about women personally. They're just objects he can
use to gratify himself.
It must be OK because Hillary's at his side - always ready to
forgive him . . . because it'll advance her career.
And speaking of her career, why did the Clintons choose to
vacation in the Finger Lakes region of New York this year?
It surely must have nothing to do with her probable race for
Senate in New York. Oh no, couldn't be.
Just like her support for the New York Yankees, Hillary has
suddenly discovered all the wonderful things about New York. She
traveled there 11 times this year before she formally announced
an exploratory committee. That means American taxpayers were
picking up the tab.
Will her campaign committee pick up her half of the vacation tab?
Somehow we doubt it.
Whatever legacy Bill and Hillary are looking for, one thing they
both will be remembered for: unmitigated gall.
