Was it just a coincidence, I wonder, that this movement for "gun
control" in 1925 preceded the stock market crash and the Great Depression
--and the rage of masses of betrayed working folk who may wished to avenge
themselves against their betrayers-- by only a few years?
If NOT a coincidence, what then does that tell us about the REAL reason
for that movement, and the TRUE sentiments lurking in the craw of the
anti-gun legislators?
Could it be ... FEAR? Fear of JUSTICE at the hands of all the "useless
eaters'?
If NOT a coincidence in 1925, what does that say about 1999, our future
NOW?
Mencken also alludes to Prohibition, the "Drug War" of its time.
All Prohibition succeeded in doing was making it easier for underworld
figures and the unscrupulously ambitious (for instance, the founders of the
Kennedy and Bronfman family fortunes and attendant respectability) to derive
greater profits in a market newly made illegal, cornered by them thanks to
the collusion of lawmakers and lawbreakers.
Much like our own times, in the demonstrably futile "Drug War" which has
made not a dent in the traffick in illegal substances but which has, instead,
provided a new and valued source of off-the-record, low-interest funds for
the continuing survival of banks, corporations, and politicos (mere hired
hands of the filthy rich) who'd otherwise be dead of natural causes, by now
stinking from the just consequences of their own corruption.
Following the Depression, crime was king and the bootlegger was rich,
filling the vacuum left by the demise of those rich from investment in a
legitimate marketplace.
Goodbye A. Carnegie, hello A. Capone. "It's the underground economy, stupid."
If history is any guide, after the "Prohibition" of our time, and after
gun control again, who can we expect to control our lives during the
inevitable NEXT Great Depression?
