PAPER SAYS US HAS SECRET DIANA FILES

The Times of India
Saturday, August 7, 1999

London - The US government holds secret files on
Britain's late Princess Diana and will not release them
because of threats to US national security, the
Guardian newspaper reported Friday.

The US National Security Agency had not set out to
investigate Princess Diana, but had acquired
information about her in the course of its intelligence
gathering, the report said. ``The reports contain only
references to Princess Diana acquired incidentally from
intelligence gathering,'' the Agency said in a
statement published by the Guardian.

``It is neither NSA policy or practice to target
British subjects in conducting our foreign intelligence
mission. However, other countries could communicate
about these subjects therefore, this agency could
acquire intelligence concerning British subjects,'' the
statement said.

The reports are under both top secret and secret
categories and cannot be released because of
``exceptionally grave damage to the national
security,'' the Agency said. Mohamed Al Fayed, whose
son Dodi also died in the 1997 Paris car crash that
killed Diana, has long said he believed there were such
documents. Al Fayed has gone to court in the US to try
to force US agencies to release them. (Reuters)
