President Clinton's Gypsy Relations
When Charles Faa Blyth was crowned king of the gypsies in 1898, at the
"Gipsy Palace" in Kirk Yetholm, near the border with England, a crowd of
10,000 watched the event. Charles Blyth was the last of the gipsy kings
and
now his "palace" (consisting of one bedroom, living room kitchen and
tiny
bathroom) is up for sale. In the 19th century, a number of Charles
Blyth's
relatives emigrated to America and President Clinton is said to be
descended from one of them (his mother was a Blyth). Gypsy's have been
connected with the Scottish Borders for 500 years when King James V
recognised "our lovit Johnne Faa, lord and earle of Little Egipt." A
cottage was made available to the gypsies at Yetholm at the end of the
17th
century.
