Philip Apologizes for Racial Gaffe
LONDON (AP) - Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, remarked Tuesday
during an official tour of a factory that an unsophisticated fuse box looked
``as if it was put in by an Indian.''
Racial equality groups expressed anger and, in an unusual move, Philip, the
Duke of Edinburgh, swiftly apologized.
``The Duke of Edinburgh regrets any offense which may have been caused ....
With hindsight he accepts that what were intended as lighthearted comments
were inappropriate,'' a Buckingham Palace statement said.
Philip, 78, has a reputation for being abrasive as well as for quips that
cause offense.
Among the most notable was telling British students during a 1986 visit with
the queen to China: ``If you stay here much longer, you'll all be slitty
eyed.''
The duke's latest blunder came while touring a plant run by electronics firm
Racal-MESL near the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.
After inspecting rooms filled with high-tech equipment, Philip spotted the
fuse box with cables stretching up to the ceiling.
Noticing the duke's interest, Managing Director Terry Nisbet joked, ``That's
the national grid.'' The duke replied, ``It looks as though it was put in by
an Indian.''
The state-funded Commission for Racial Equality said the duke's comment was
``very unfortunate.''
``We look to the royal family to be positively promoting racial equality,''
the commission said.
Scottish lawmaker George Lyon called it ``yet another example of him going
about with his foot in his mouth.'' And the independence-seeking Scottish
National Party remarked that Philip ``needs to respect other races and
cultures far more the he does.''
