If you read Scarlet and the Beast - John Daniels reckons London is Babylon. Where else
could you have a man in the next flat looking like Santa with front tooth missing,
standing
in his jockeys waiting for his prostitute buddies attempting to crawl up to the 5th
floor in
their heroin stupor dribbling all over the carpet and moaning loudly. Then you go
downstairs
to pay your rent to the Philippino landlord in his long pink fingernails, false
eyelashes,
kisscurls and evening gown. Then you go to work past the clone gays in check shirts and
jeans with the key in their pockets to indicate passive or active. Past the rest of the
transvestites, bovver boys, skinheads, and druggies. Then you get to work at a dept
store
and there are about 2,000 staff with half men. Most are gay and are at it everywhere -
behind the sofas in the furniture dept. They boast about having 6 different men a
night.
My boss was a gambler and spent most of the day doing spot the ball and scratch bingo
and
couldn't understand how us New Zealanders could be happy with no culture. The staff
were
thieves and spent so much time stealing, the whole place nearly went broke. One boss
was
caught trying to take home a case of champagne. The window dressers stole the stuff
they had
used in the windows.
The churches are locked because of thieves. Except the Catholic ones where some people
prayed to statues. Spiritualist churches called up the dead for lonely souls to get a
message of hope. There were pagans and witches everywhere. There were punks with
nothing to
do, except put safety pins in their noses. Jobless and homeless people shivering and
hungry.
Poor lonely old people with no money trying to buy one tomato at the supermarket,
unable to
pay for the heater..They went to the afternoon movies to keep warm and sat through
excessive
violence and swearing. After 7 years hard labour in 'Babylon' I am now probably sane
again.
When you are tired of London you are tired of life -the ad said.
