Almost too near where I live, a *huge* new new shopping
mall has opened. It happened while I was recently on the road,
and I dropped by this evening to see what it's all about.
Walking through, I observed a really amazing sporting goods store
and went in. I acquired a new rope and other accessories for my
climbing rig, and also decided to replace a lost Gerber knife,
resigned to the fact that I'll never see the old one again.
Headed toward the knives, I observed a glass case filled
with new revolvers. "Hmm," I said, "How very interesting. Can
the semi-autos be far away?"
Nope. There were quite very many of them at hand,
including really expensive Kimber .45's in a range of variety I'd
never seen outside of catalogs and magazines. "Good deal," sez
I, because I've been idly searching for something in the .380 to
9mm range to fit a fairly tight set of specifications, and I
think I might have found a lead in this store.
I attracted a harried salesman's attention and told him
which blade I wanted. He said that they were stocked in a
different area of the store, and led the way. As we walked, I
told him, "I'm really surpised and happy to see this large a
selection of handguns in this store."
He let go of a sigh and said, "You wouldn't believe our
sales. We've been 30% over our best projections, and we can
barely keep up."
"Wow," I said. "What's that all about?"
Without tinge of malice or acrimony, he looked me
straight in the eye and said, "Bill Clinton. I've been selling
guns for a long time, and that guy has done more for the business
than anything else I know. All the gun manufacturers put
together could not match his advertising for handguns."
Ladies & gentlemen; we are not alone.
