Determining Current Cult Involvement
Experiences held in the unconscious have a present-tense quality. They have
not yet been completed. They are still active, because they are unresolved.
Therefore when inner parts or alters come out to talk, they will often talk
in the present tense, as if an event is still going on. If you're listening
to protector or maintainer alters, it may sound as though they are currently
dangerous or still cult active. While occasionally they may still be cult
active, most often they are not.... Another possibility to consider is that
some alters may continue cult ceremonies on their own...
Caryn StarDancer explains:
"As alters who have been repressed begin to surface through recovery, some
survivors experience an increased drive to become cult-active. .. The person
on the outside may not know whether or not they're cult active...a survivor
may get a phone call with a message which contains a programmed cue, which
evokes an alter who then goes to a cult meeting. A few hours might be lost or
even a few days, but when the "host" comes back, it may only feel vaguely
confusing. or as if something is wrong but he or she doesn't know what... and
that is a chronic feeling for many survivors. There is usually a story in the
mind that "explains" what happened, and it doesn't seem quite right, but
those are the things you feel you don't want to question too much because you
get nervous
(IMO, this explains why people may not noticed if they have an alter
reporting back to a certain group, online or offline)
...it is also possible that an alter is "attending rituals"...in a
...internal scenario...people should not panic or jump to conclusions until
enough information can be gathered to evaluate the situation. If it becomes
apparent that the survivor does have an active alter... s/he's simply
becoming aware of what s/he's dealing with and what precautions need to be
taken to protect self and others.
(IMO, unhealthy online groups that deal with survivors could also trigger
alters and use them to report back to them)
...as soon as you discover presently active cult alters, you need to deal
with them, directly, as quickly as possible...It doesn't work to try and
change them through others. They need to see for themselves that they've been
tricked and conditioned ...and help them realize that the cult's power is
really bondage, and that the real power is in working to keep the self system
out and safe.
(IMO, it is very important to cut all contact with possible cult members and
or unhealthy groups that may have handlers (people that know the triggers and
use them for their own or someone else's benefit))
To help advance co-consciousness, the host and each alter might begin to keep
a journal...survivors often discover old, destructive patterns that, once
identified, can be addressed."
An alter's original task has been to keep the trauma in a dissociated
unconscious. Now the task is to gradually make each of the alters aware of
one another.
