The following represents one of my attempts to explain something of
homoeopathy to individuals with little or no previous understanding of it.
Please fell free to debate it, or discard it, or flame me via private email,
all flames will be enthusiastically answered (your privacy will not be
violated,
and no public whining will be indulged in by me. Previous whiners need not
apply.)

Homoeopathy is a bit like alchemy- the goal is a transformative one-
to understand the patterns from the natural world that various medicinal
substances are capable of imposing on an individual -in wholistic viewpoint.
A wholistic viewpoint requires a bit of spiritually oriented psychological
insight, some intuition, some medical knowledge- occasional fits of
clairvoyance are a big plus <grin>
Homoeopathy is based in several principles which it holds in common with
alchemy & magick-
The law of Similars "likes cure likes"; the law of correspondences "as
above, so below"; the law of Sympathy "the smallest part is similar to the
whole" .. and others.
The "Philosopher's Stone" of homoeopathy consists of the basic "laws" and
the Materia Medica. Understand this, and you may begin to use homoeopathy
little by little, starting with first-aid applications as I did, and as many
do.
The law of similars: "likes cure likes" is how this is stated in
homoeopathy... the way this law is used is by matching the patterns the
medicines are capable of imposing on a healthy individual. This knowledge is
gained by "provings," where volunteers subject themselves to the medicines
and great amounts of detail are collected indicating what symptoms the
medicine
has CAUSED in the "provers" .. and then collated into "Materia Medicas"
which are
encyclopediac books filled with the various symptoms "proven" and also
"clinically cured" symptoms (where the medicine has shown curative effect)
& instances of gross-material poisonings. (snakebites, accidental
poisonings, etc..)
All of these contribute understanding to what these substances cause in the
way
of symptoms- and therefore, what the will cure- under the law of Similars,
which Homoeopathy knows to be the only TRUE "law of cure." Treatment by
allopathic (most "modern" medicine, including much of modern herbology)
means
(attempted cure by Opposites) is seldom fruitful in the long term, as
generally
symptoms of dis-ease are at best palliated, or at worst "Suppressed" which
leads to an overall degradation of long term health; to often subtle
shifting of
the expression (immediate symptoms) of what is actually a chronic dis-ease
process-
for instance, a "hot" symptom on the skin (like eczema) is treated with a
"cold"
antibiotic (cold is the nature of antibiotics) ... this may lead over time
to the
development of symptoms of a more serious nature, such as general allergies,
or
symptoms centered in more vital organs/tissues such as lungs/heart.
Homoeopathic medicinal substances are created by a sort of alchemical
process which
separates the "gross physical material" from the "subtle spirit-like
essence,"
which is imprinted upon a carrier such as water, alcohol, or sugar pills.
Hence, we are able to use substances which are "inert" or "unreactive"
such as gold.. or substances which are biochemically "normal" such as salt,
various herbs, etc... and substances which are violently poisonous such as
snake
or spider venom, mercury, arsenic, etc.. all without direct "chemical"
effects,
due to the fact that the "material" element has been REMOVED,
leaving only the "vibrational energy pattern" or "essence".
The medicines have no DIRECT biochemical involvements- their often deep and
powerful effects are evoked on the "dynamic" or "subtle planes" - as this is
the level of existence into which the "essence" has been refined.
The creative force which is the "innate healing intelligence" (heal: to make
Whole),
and of which each individual partakes- is a "dynamic" or sort of "cosmic"
subtle
organizing energy- the "secret of life" as it were- the "vital force" as it
is termed in
homoeopathy.... is the portion of beingness responsible for sustaining and
maintaining
life and health in our mental/emotional/physical bodies.
Ideally this innate healing intelligence would theoretically provide optimum
health
and longevity- but just as a tree may grow bent due to a constant
sea-breeze,
so may the "vital force" take on a derangement of varying severity... these
derangments
have their roots in the "chronic miasms" as studied by Hahnemannian
homoeopaths.
It is the "derangement" of this "vital force" which is the soil into which
is
sowed the seeds of dis-ease:
Stressors such as injury/accident, habitual negative thoughts, pathogens,
poisons,
pollution, poor nutrition, karmic/hereditary susceptibility to chronic
dis-ease of
various types (which tend to be grouped around several chronic dis-ease
patterns
of pre-disposition which are known as "chronic miasms") all may contribute
to what are
called "acute exacerbations" (flareups of dis-ease symptoms) of the chronic
miasm.
A homoeopath strives to see as deeply as s/he may- the Overall PATTERNS of
symptoms,
always searching for the corresponding Pattern within the Natural World as
represented
and communicated to us by the medicinal substances in the Materia Medica.
Successful cure to in homoeopathy does not mean merely removing one small
local symptom!
In many cases this is NOT what a homoeopath would see as the direction of
true CURE.
The ultimate goal is transformative- to evoke perfectly directed curative
response from
the vital force under the gentle impetus of the "simillimum" - the one (of
thousands)
perfectly corresponding medicinal substance. Unfortunately this does not
always mean
there will be immediate cessation of all symptoms, but always a movement
toward
OVERALL greater health- and toward ultimate "unwinding" of the twists or
kinks
worked on the vital force by chronic dis-ease- the removal of the "chronic
miasm" with
it's engrammatic susceptibility to dis-ease symptoms of the whole
individual,
body/mind/emotion- as one.
Since the goal of homoeopathy is CURE of tendency toward chronic
degenerative dis-ease
process, and since treatment is relatively inexpensive, homoeopathy has
experienced
some political suppression by the pharmaceutical industry and it's
prescribers.

In India, there are full-fledged homoeopathic hospitals, as there once were
in the U.S.,
and homoeopathy is widely used and every bit as popular and accepted as
allopathic
"modern" medicine, along with traditional Indian Ayur Vedic medicine.
