If you hang on long enough, if you have enough spunk to put on the suspenders every evening and you don't fall asleep on the air [doesn't matter if your audience snoozes off from time to time], one day, you'll win one. And on Wednesday night, it was finally his turn! Larry King, host of CNN's LARRY KING LIVE, received his first News and Documentary Emmy for Outstanding Interview/Interviewer at the 20th Annual News/Documentary Awards last night in New York City! King won the award for his 1998 interview with Karla Faye Tucker, which was Tucker's last interview before her execution. A sampling of King's award winning questions: "You have been in prison since that day you were arrested?" "Do they feed you well?" "When they said you were sentenced to death, who said that, the judge?" "Because there were axes, a lot of blood. It was a horrible death, right?" King was an easy choice for Emmy. But it was a bittersweet victory. King was left with the dilemma of celebrating an Emmy win knowing that Tucker was executed by lethal injection. "There will be no dancing on her grave," one CNN producer said Thursday morning. "Sure, it would have been nicer to win, say, for an interview with Marlon Brando. But Larry is now determined to do even better work." TIME magazine once said of King: "Now, after a half-century of hustling and scratching, after no college and hard knocks, after working as everything from mail-room clerk to racetrack flack, after six marriages, one annulment and five divorces, after being arrested for grand larceny, after declaring bankruptcy, after suffering a heart attack and undergoing bypass surgery, after all this and more, Larry King has finally arrived."
