IMF to send investigative mission to East Timor
WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund will send an
investigative team to East Timor to assess its economic needs since its vote
to become independent from Indonesia, IMF spokesman Bill Murray said on
Sunday.
The team's purpose would be to ``assess the economic situation and needs and
requirements'' with a view to possibly providing financial assistance in
future, the IMF spokesman said.
On Friday, the World Bank said it was willing to provide assistance to help
an independent East Timor build its economy with the support of other donors
and agencies.
Late on Friday, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said 78.5 percent of
voters
in a U.N.-organised ballot in East Timor last Monday had chosen independence
from Indonesia, which annexed the territory in 1976.
Indonesian President B.J. Habibie has said East Timor will be allowed to go
free after a vote in the Indonesian legislature later this year.
Murray said he could not say how soon the IMF team might go to East Timor,
where conditions were unsettled and dangerous in the wake of the
independence
vote.
Weekend reports from the region said organised anti-independence militias
were threatening and shooting at United Nations officials and foreign
journalists.
The IMF cannot make loans to nations that are not members of the
organisation
but, as it does in Kosovo, can provide technical advice. With the
possibility
that an independent East Timor could apply in future for membership, the IMF
is interested in assessing its economic prospects, Murray said.
