It has already eroded civil liberties and encroaches on protections that we used to have, like the Posse Comitatus act, by having the police do the work with the military in support, with weapons and advice. It is just a way of getting around their direct intervention, which would still alarm some people. There will come a day though when the activity of the police is identical to that of the military ad then no one will notice and it will be over for freedom.
