-Caveat Lector-

Something is wrong (at least wronger than usual) here in the Bay Area
...
First, really unparallelled thunder and lightning (I watched a massive
lightning bolt travel HORIZONTALLY from horizon to horizon, SLOWLY) twice in
two weeks, each time "explained" as a byproduct of a dying Pacific hurricane
-- two different ones.
Second, COINCIDING with a thunder-and-lightning display, an EARTHQUAKE
of exactly the rare type that struck Taiwan -- arising near the SURFACE of
the earth.
Geez, I wonder if China is test-running some secret Tesla weaponry ...

4.2 quake centered in Sonoma County

San Francisco Examiner, Sept. 23, 1999

A "very common" earthquake caused some uncommon jitters for
Santa Rosa-area residents Wednesday but damaged nothing more than
nerves, authorities said.
The 4.2 temblor struck about 5 miles northeast of Rohnert
Park at 3:27 p.m. and was felt as far south as San Francisco.
Earthquakes of magnitude 4.2 "are usually not even felt,"
said Pat Jorgenson of the U.S. Geological Survey. "There is
probably at least one of them in California every day."
Jorgenson said Wednesday's shaker had been noticed because
"it was fairly shallow - less than 10 miles deep."
Santa Rosa resident Betty Becker, a native San Franciscan,
said she had experienced many earthquakes in her 75 years "and,
boy, this one really shook."

Lightning Storm Hits San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9 (AP) - A rare, spectacular lightning storm flashed
through the Bay area, bringing hail, rain and power outages.

At its peak Wednesday night, the storm cut power to about 55,000 Pacific Gas
& Electric customers. That figure was down to 9,400 by early today, utility
spokeswoman Maureen Bogues said.

For about 12 hours, the storm touched off hundreds of lightning strikes from
San Francisco to the Santa Cruz Mountains, 60 miles south. Trees and power
poles were set on fire, making it dangerous for crews to fix electricity
failures affecting spots from the Oregon line to Bakersfield, 400 miles away.

One lightning bolt nicked a chimney in San Francisco and another in San Jose
split a tree, part of which fell onto a house. No injuries were reported.

``This is spectacular,'' National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Kopps
said. ``It's just phenomenal.''

San Francisco Area Hit by Rare Lightning, Thunderstorm,

San Francisco, Sept. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The San Francisco Bay area was hit with
hail, rain and power outages caused by a rare lightning and thunderstorm, the
Associated Press said. The storm, a remnant of Hurricane Greg, touched off
hundreds of lightning strikes from San Francisco to the Santa Cruz Mountains,
60 miles north. At its peak last night, the storm cut power to about 55,000
Pacific Gas & Electric Corp. customers, although only 9,400 remained without
power by early today, utility spokeswoman Maureen Bogues told AP.

Tropical Storm Greg, downgraded from a hurricane, battered Mexico's west
coast as it moved toward the tip of the country's Baja California peninsula,
with maximum winds dropping to 60 mph from 75 mph.

Quake Rattle Bay Area

ROHNERT PARK, Calif., Sept. 22 (AP) - A moderate earthquake measuring 4.2 in
magnitude rattled Northern California on Wednesday, but no damage or injuries
were reported.

The quake happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. and lasted only a few seconds,
according to Pat Jorgenson, spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey. It
was centered along the Rodgers Creek fault, about five miles northeast of
Rohnert Park, a small city 42 miles north of San Francisco.

Night storm flashes around the Bay

     by Larry D. Hatfield,
San Francisco Examiner, Sept. 22, 1999

     Blame it all on Hilary.
That's monsoonal Hilary, not the senatorial one.
The remnants of former Hurricane Hilary, lumbering
northwestward in the tropical Pacific, scattered flash-bang
weather over the Bay Area and much of the rest of California
early Wednesday.
Window-rattling thunder, brilliant streaks of lightning
and occasionally heavy rain moved through the Bay Area,
starting some grass fires, causing minor flooding, scattered
power failures, setting off car and burglar alarms and otherwise
making the last day of summer's weather interesting.
There was more to come, with roving bands of thunderstorms
expected to create thunder, lightning, gusty winds, rain and hail
around the region throughout the day.
Although there was some rain associated with the unsettled
weather, state fire officials worried that the swarms of
lightning strikes could start new wildfires.

Fires still burning

Fog, high humidity and some rain helped keep it static
Wednesday morning, but a major fire continued to burn in Los
Padres National Forest south of Carmel, forcing evacuation of
residences, monasteries and businesses there. The 2-week-old
lightning-caused fire has burned 28,079 acres of rugged coastland
and was only 16 percent contained early Wednesday.
In the Trinity Alps in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest,
two major fires were only 55 percent contained and were
threatening to spread west and northward into the Six Rivers and
Klamath National Forests. Those fires have raged through 50,173
acres of brush and timberland.
National Weather Service and fire officials warned that the
continued lightning strikes, combined with generally dry tinder
conditions, made fire danger extreme throughout the West.
Hilary, substantially weakening as it moved northwest over
the ocean, pushed monsoonal moisture from the south to north
Tuesday and early Wednesday. Downtown Los Angeles was drenched
with a half-inch of rain early Tuesday afternoon and a tenth of
an inch that fell at Meadows Field in Bakersfield broke a
70-year-old record for Sept. 21 rainfall there.
"The moisture coming over the region is very disorganized,"
said weather service meteorologist Tim McCLungin Los Angeles.
"We may have gusty winds and lightning that has the potential to
start fires, but it's very scattered."
Although heavy downpours caused brief flooding in various
places - including on the San Francisco approaches to the Bay
Bridge - rainfall amounts in the Bay Area were negligible.
Lightning strikes caused a handful of brush fires along
Interstate 5 in the Tracy area and southward, slowing traffic but
causing no major damage.
Marin County fire officials reported a small lightning fire
at Big Rock on Lucas Valley Road at 3:40 a.m. It was quickly put
out.
Sonoma County authorities reported at least three minor
grass fires caused by downed power lines.

Power failures

The weather also was believed to be the cause of power
failures in Sebastopol, El Cerrito and Los Angeles that left
thousands of PG&E customers without electricity. The biggest
blackout affected some 12,000 customers in the Sebastopol area.
Thunderstorms were expected to continue in the southern
Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley through
Wednesday night.
In the Bay Area, mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers
and thunderstorms should hang around Wednesday night, giving way
to variable clouds and diminishing shower activity Thursday. For
the weekend, fair and warmer weather was predicted in what
forecasters called a return to typical fall weather.
Autumn begins at 3:31 a.m. PDT Thursday.
