BP is fined £4m over Alaska waste

               BY PAUL ARMSTRONG
BP AMOCO has been forced to make an embarrassing
confession and pay penalties totalling $7 million (£4.3
million) over its disposal of hazardous waste on Alaska's
  North Slope.

The petroleum group acknowledged that its methods for
dealing with waste products at the Endicott oilfield
between 1993 and 1995 were illegal and said it "deeply
  regretted" the move.

As part of its out-of-court settlement with the US Justice
Department, BP agreed to a five-year probation and the
implementation of an environmental management system
that would be monitored by a court-approved official.
