-Caveat Lector-

Misinformation/disinformation=no information. Perhaps the American *public*
did not envision a future war with Russia; perhaps the mass media were used
to lull them into a (temporary) state of complacency...but be assured that
the Powers That Were, in the State Department and the Pentagon, were very
well aware that their next enemy had to be the Soviet Union. If you read the
excerpts from *Betrayed* that Kris has been posting, about Occupied Germany,
you know that the U.S. Military Government systematically courted ex-Nazis,
even war criminals, to run the new West German state, precisely because they
were anti-Communist. Do some research on the development of the American
strategic bomber force: planning began as early as 1943 for a drastic
expansion of the Air Force, with far more sophisticated weaponry than anyone
had yet seen...and the target was to be, not Nazi Germany or Japan--their
defeat was only a matter of time--but the Soviet Union, our supposed ally.
No, the American *people* may have been led in 1945-46 to see the Russians
as "Yankees in fur hats," but the American *government* was planning not
just for a *cold* war, but for a *hot* war...
