The World Trade Organization (WTO)
The World Trade Organization, one of the main results
of the 1993 Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade
Negotiations, was established on January 1, 1995.
The new WTO has a clear mandate from governments to
further global economic coherence. The WTO will take
charge of administering the new global trade rules,
as agreed in the Uruguay Round, which sought to
establish the rule of law in International Trade.
The agreement establishing the WTO envisages a
single institutional framework encompassing the
GATT, as modified by the Uruguay Round.
Membership in the WTO automatically entails accepting
all the results of the Round, with the exception of
the Plurilateral Trade Agreements (PTAs). Acceptance
is based on having schedules of market access concessions
and commitments with respect to tariffs and non-tariff
measures in industrial goods, as well as undertakings
in agriculture, and schedules of specific commitments
in the area of services.
The WTO has five main functions:
To facilitate the implementation, administration,
operation and further operations of the agreement
establishing the WTO. It shall also provide the
framework for the implementation, administration
and operation of the PTAs;
To provide the forum for negotiations concerning the
multilateral trade relations of its Members;
To administer the Understanding on Rules and Procedures
Governing the Settlement of Disputes;
To administer the Trade Policy Review Mechanism;
To co-operate, as appropriate, with the International
Monetary Fund, the International Bank for
Reconstruction and Development, and its
affiliated agencies.
With the above 'resume' it is quite doubtful this group
this group has any desires toward the ends Nader claims.
Sound like someone is looking for some attention for
