According to the average estimate of analysts polled by Reuters, consumer prices likely rose at a 0.4 percent pace last month. Excluding often-volatile food and energy costs, prices probably advanced at a 0.3 percent pace, according to economists' forecasts. The report will be released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. Also on Tuesday, Commerce releases September's housing starts and building permits figures. Analysts polled by Reuters expect that housing starts fell to 1.64 million units from 1.68 million units in August. As for building permits, analysts polled expect the number of permits rose to 1.63 million from 1.61 million. More earnings news will also dominate the Wall Street agenda Tuesday, particularly from high-tech companies as Microsoft (MSFT), Peoplesoft (PSFT), and Xilinx (XLNX), among others, unveil their earnings. Philip Morris (MO), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Reynolds Metals (RLM), Northwest Airlines (NWAC) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) will unveil their quarterly performances. And shares of both Martha Stewart Living Omnipoint (MSO) and World Wrestling Federation Entertainment (WWFE) will undoubtedly garner attention as the year's most anticipated initial public offerings begin trading. Martha Stewart shares will trade at an initial price of 18 a share, while World Wrestling Federation will trade at an initial price of 17 a share.
