Florida education commissioner Tom Gallager has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat from which Connie Mack is retiring. His entry sets up a primary battle with Congressman Bill McCollum. Gallagaher's candidacy raises two questions: first, whether he can corral the money necessary to compete in an expensive state like Florida and second, whether a moderate stands a chance in a GOP primary there. Early polls show Gallagher much more competitive than McCollum with the for-now Democratic frontrunner, insurance commissioner and former congressman Bill Nelson. 2. GOP Senator Strom Thurmond has said he'll retire at the end of his current term in January 2003, at which point he'll be 100 years of age. He says he feels fine and vigorous but doesn't think South Carolina voters would understand if he ran for another term. He'll probably get remarried and start fathering more children. 3. House Republicans' hopes of continuing their majority suffered another blow recently when senior incumbent John Porter of Illinois' 10th District announced he'll be retiring. Porter's district of North Shore suburbs like Winnetka and Lake Forest could be competitive. In fact, Porter's predecessor was a Democrat (Abner Mikva). 4. On the other hand, Minnesota Democratic Congressman David Minge announced he's staying put and not running for the Senate.
