-Caveat Lector-

Ah, you see why I posted this article... Exactly right. The point is not the
right of Scientologists to practice their beliefs. The point is their
concerted campaign to infiltrate their members into positions of authority
in government...not OPENLY, but clandestinely.

Of course, Scientology is hardly the only religion to be guilty of this
approach to civil power. The Catholic Church has a looong history of
infiltration and subversion, particularly during the
Reformation/Counter-Reformation, when the Jesuits were used as the Pope's
secret service; they undertook many, many secret operations, including the
assassination of Protestant monarchs, and patterned their activities
directly on the model of the Hashishim. More recently the Mormon Church has
sought to place as many of its members in positions of authority, both in
government and in industry; this has been done quietly, and it has been
extremely effective in a number of sectors such as aerospace, where Mormons
dominate both government agencies(e.g., NASA) and many corporations (e.g.,
Morton Thiokol).

PUBLIC proclamation of a church's beliefs is perfectly acceptable, even when
those beliefs are bizarre. Seeking to influence public discourse, to
influence the course of legislation, is the essence of Western democracy.
When a church tries to control society SECRETLY, however, THAT is entirely
wrong, and MUST be stopped before liberty is completely swallowed up.
