Those conceived in December are born in September, so if Jesus was conceived
around December 25th, close to the winter solstice, he'd have been born close
to the autumn equinox, when the sun leaves Virgo ("born of a Virgin") and
conjoins the star Spica, which was interpreted in Rome as the Grain-Child
(Seed) born to the Earth Mother.
This was exactly what the Imperial poet Vergil predicted in his Eclogues ca.
30 BC.

On the other hand, the association of Jesus' season of birth with
December-January is so OLD a tradition in the early Church that one has to
wonder. Those born in December were conceived in March, and if Jesus was
BORN around the time of the winter solstice,
he'd have been CONCEIVED around the time of Passover, i.e., the spring
equinox, and
it's a metaphysically attractive picture that Jesus, dying on "Easter," was
not only born but REBORN on the same day he died -- showing the unbroken
circle of "eternal life."

Nevertheless, I agree with you that Jesus was most likely born in September,
since the "shepherds tending their flocks" statement indicates such a period,
and because at that
time there was an impressive visible conjunction of planets that could not
have failed to attract the notice of Herod's court astrologers, who would
have interpreted it as a sign of
one being born who could be a "new Moses" or "Messiah" able to challenge
their King.
Possibly such an omen would even have been felt as far away as the Roman
Empire.
