I can't believe Krauthammer could spin this badly. If it was the Democrats
who ended that mess in Vietnam, they should issue them a medal. The
disgusting mess in Nicaragua was a disgrace to this country, and if it is now
considered a democracy, that could give democracy a bad name. The same for
El Salvador where we seemed to take part in some activities, I hate to think
about.
Had the boys in Washington handled the situation in Russia with something
besides a grand show of corporate and individual greed, our achievements in
ending the cold war might have had a positive outcome. If Reagan got the
thing underway, he deserves a lot of credit, but after that the carpetbaggers
here joined up with the scaleywags there, and if Russia is now a democracy,
that must be making us look pretty bad too.
As for the Gulf War, going to battle to protect the oil industry (Bush family
interests), was strange indeed. It was interesting that few of our military
were killed outright, but they have for the most part been suffering ever
since, and very little has been done.
And don't forget how long the Croats and Muslims were battered by the well
armed Serbs without the Bush Administration saying one word. Watching the
zoo keepers shot while trying to feed the animals, watching the lovers who
had been given permission to cross into the Serb zone, shot by Serb snipers,
didn't bother President Bush at all. For years I wondered why he didn't do
something. During the very early days of that mess, a harsh word from Bush
would have stopped the whole thing. He said nothing. Around a year ago, I
was listening to Thomas Eagleberger on a talking heads thing. Someone asked
him why George Bush did nothing and said nothing when all that started. He
said, "Well, he had business interests there."
That's what I like, foreign policy conducted so as not to endanger the
business interests of those in power.
I think Mr. Krauthammer needs to sit down and rethink his column.
