Malaysia Has No Hidden Agenda in E. Timor: Official

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov. 2) XINHUA - Malaysia said Tuesday that it has no agenda
in going to East Timor other than a sincere wish to serve and fulfill the
responsibilities under the U.N. peacekeeping mission.

Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi made the statement here Tuesday
when asked to comment on the East Timorese leader Jose Ramos Horta's
statement Monday.

Horta was reported as saying from Darwin, Australia, that civil disobedience
could occur if a Malaysian was picked to command the U.N. peacekeeping
mission in East Timor and that no one would cooperate with a U.N.
peacekeeping force commander from Malaysia.

"We are not entering that area with a political agenda, only to serve the
U.N. mission as peacekeeping troops," Bernama news agency quoted the deputy
prime minister as saying.

Abdullah said Malaysia had no ulterior motives in its desire to serve in the
U.N. peacekeeping mission.

"It looks like he (Horta) is dead serious in not wanting Malaysia to be
present there," he said, adding, "Any dispute (on Malaysia's role in the
U.N. mission) will only complicate relief work for the East Timor people."

"What he (Horta) did was not good for our image," Abdullah said, adding that
for the sake of East Timor's peace, it was important that whatever
recommendations made by the U.N. secretary-general be accepted.

He said Horta might not be aware that Malaysia was among the developing
countries with vast experience in U.N. peacekeeping duties.

Malaysia has been involved in U.N. peacekeeping missions in Africa, Asia and
other places, Abdullah said.
