Alpha Al

“Time magazine revealed that Al Gore hired (Naomi) Wolf, who has written
extensively on women and sexual power, as a $15,000-a-month consultant to
help him with everything from his shift to earth tones to his efforts to
break with Bill Clinton. ‘Wolf has argued internally that Gore is a ‘beta
male’ who needs to take on the ‘alpha male’ in the Oval Office before the
public will see him as the top dog,’ write Time’s Michael Duffy and Karen
Tumulty. Of course, when a man has to pony up a fortune to teach him how to
be a man, that definitely takes the edge off his top-dogginess.”

- Columnist Maureen Dowd, New York Times, 11/3/99

“Alpha Al” Can’t Shake Clinton Stench

“Al Gore's public attempts to distance himself from the many scandals of the
Clinton administration are offset by his penchant for hiring advisors with
questionable backgrounds and credentials. His campaign chairman resigned
from Congress under a cloud and is under investigation for misappropriating
money while serving as head of an American trade delegation and his advisor
on women's issues is a self-admitted sex addict who urges schools to teach
teenagers the finer points of oral sex. ‘The Gore double-standard is
astounding, even by current Washington standards,’ says political scientist
George Harleigh. ‘His walk doesn't match his talk.’"

They Got the Wrong Monopoly

“On Friday, a federal judge declared that a particular organization had used
its monopoly power ‘to stifle innovation, reduce competition and hurt
consumers.’ He is letting an anti-trust suit proceed against this
organization. No, it's not the public school systems. It's Microsoft.”

- Libby Sternberg, 11/6/99

Newt.com

“Everyone in Washington wants to know: what’s next for Newt? The answer:
cyberlobbyist, at least in part. Fortune has learned that former House
Speaker Newt Gingrich, through his political action committee (PAC), is
trying to mobilize networks of people around the country to advocate three
legislative proposals - partial privatization of Social Security, tax
limitation initiatives, and the elimination of the estate tax - all with the
help of Internet sites now under construction. ... SocialSecurityPlus.org...
recommends that people be allowed to put some of the money they now fork over
to the federal government through the payroll tax into a personal account.
... A second Gingrich proposal, called MaxTax.org advocates that people not
be forced to pay more than 25% of their income in taxes to federal, state and
local governments combined. ... The third Gingrich site, NoDeathTax.org,
presses for the elimination of the estate tax, which is also known by critics
as the death tax.”

- Jeffrey Birnbaum, Fortune, 10/5/99

GOP Chief Gives Porter Early Nod

“From a national perspective, (state Sen. Jon) Porter (R) is viewed as ‘one
of our premier candidates,’ says Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va. The Nevada seat is
‘one of our top 10 races, which has a lot to do with how money is
disbursed.’
Davis is chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and
views the seat as pivotal to the GOP retaining control of the House. He said
Porter was recruited by the committee and has the party’s solid backing...”

Tale of Two Beers

The Virginia Registrar of Voters is having some problems with the Department
of Motor Vehicles. Seems significant numbers of people who registered to
vote at the DMV weren’t on the voter rolls last Tuesday when they showed up
at the polls. Here in Nevada, a state Assemblyman is having some problems
with with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Seems significant numbers of
people who show up to register their cars, etc., are being made to wait for
hours on end because of a DMV computer system foul-up. Both the Virginia
Registrar of Voters and the Nevada Assemblyman are charged with fixing a
major problem with the DMV - and both are named Robert Beers. What are the
odds?
