During an Oval Office exchange with reporters on Tuesday, Clinton was asked if he was concerned “about the Chinese controlling the canal.” The president said he wasn’t worried. “I think the Chinese will, in fact, be bending over backwards to make sure that they run it in an competent and able and fair manner … I would be very surprised if any adverse consequences flowed from the Chinese running the canal,” he said. All of which might make one think the Chinese government now operates the Panama Canal. It doesn’t. For months, Republicans have been sounding off about the fact that a Hong Kong-based company, Hutchison Whampoa, won contracts to run shipping terminals at either end of the canal. The canal itself remains under the control of the Panama Canal Commission. At the end of the year, it reverts to the Panamanian government.
