-Caveat Lector- >The persons who were wearing gas masks also seemed to be wearing a lot of very heavy clothing. This make a great deal of sense. . . . The heavy clothing protected the "protestors" from the variety of "non-lethal munitions" which were used by the Seattle Police. Another advantage to wearing multiple layers of clothing is that they enable very quick changes of appearance. This was a technique perfected in the sixties in response to the practice of police snatch squads dashing up to the edge of a demo, grabbing who they perceived to be ringleaders and quick hustling them back to police lines before the crowd could react. Needless to say, they only grabbed people from the front line. They would never, ever go after anybody two persons in from the edge because they woulda got stomped in the process and knew it. I'm not saying the snatch squads were cowards. They weren't. They were just about the only cops I ever saw at a demo who showed any courage whatsoever. But they weren't fools. Sometimes they got stomped anyhow. Once targeted, a demonstrator may slip into a tight crowd and disappear from police view when only three or four people deep. One guy I heard of once was grabbed on the wrist by a very large plainclothes cop, the head in fact of the local Red Squad. As he stood at the edge of a crowd in a hood and a mask, the cop rushed him up and grabbed him, just like that. This guy aikidoed his way out of it (easy) and ran ten feet into the crowd which opened to let him in. He crouched, took off his mask, hooded sweatshirt and baggy pants and emerged a new man. One minute later was right back in the very same spot on the edge of the crowd in tight jeans and a windbreaker of a different color than the sweatshirt that now lay underfoot and abandoned.
