-Caveat Lector- WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a prelude to war! ************************************************ The New & Improved (?) Al Gore “Al Gore, who used to resemble a wax dummy, but without the sense of humor, has been working hard to remake his image, and he’s succeeded. He now comes across as an overbearing jerk. Behold the alpha male!” - Columnist Steve Chapman, Creators Syndicate ********************************************************* “Spam” Nothing But Free Speech Junk Mail "This is simply the online equivalent of something that's already being done through direct mail. If this is an invasion of privacy, I guess direct mail is, too. I guess the real question is not a legal one, but really how effective this is going to be." - Terry Francke, president of the California First Amendment Coalition, commenting on George W. Bush's ads that target voters through the Internet, Salon, 12/22/99 ****************************************** Johnny One-Note “To ask about Senator McCain’s policy positions other than his commitment to passing (campaign finance reform) is to be reminded on the one-line joke, ‘Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?’” - Columnist Grover Norquist, American Spectator, December 1999/January 2000 ********************************************************** Avoiding Public Schools Like the Plague In a front-page story last week, the Wall Street Journal revealed how, despite wide and diverse socio-economic backgrounds, children attending Pentagon-run schools for military personnel are performing well above their peers stuck in the public school system. The difference is so stark, that parents of students in the Pentagon-run schools will do almost anything to keep their kids out of the public school system. Bernard Samuel, an army sergeant stationed at Louisville, Kentucky, is contemplating retirement next March. If he does, his family would have to leave the base and pull his kids out of the Fort Knox-run school system. “The prospect so distresses Ms. Samuel that she is thinking of joining the Army herself rather than sending her children to local public schools,” reports the WSJ. “They care about learning here,” Ms. Samuel was quoted as saying. So horrified are some parents at the prospect of sending their kids to local public schools once they retire, or their eligibility runs out, that they actually “go to court to have friends or former neighbors on base appointed as guardians” so their kids can continue their Pentagon-run school education. How bad are the local public schools when mothers feel they have to join the Army, or parents feel they have to give up legal guardianship, just so their children can get a quality education? The time to put an end to the public school monopoly has long-since arrived! ************************************************************ Coming Out of the Closet in Hollywood “The self-assured young professional is ready to come out of the closet. Only five years into her career, she knows the risks, but she’s willing to go public, she says, to bring the issue into the open. Ellen Treanor is a Republican. And an actor. In famously liberal Hollywood, that combination is usually an oxymoron. ... Treanor and other Republican actors tell tales of being ostracized by casting directors who prefer to surround themselves with like-minded people. While a 1950s-style blacklist is probably more the stuff of paranoia, they still say they fear being cut out of the business for politics rather than lack of talent. ... Prominent actors, like Tom Selleck, Arnold Schwarzenegger and (Charlton) Heston, have succeeded regardless of their politics, but in the eyes of lesser-known actors, such outspokenness is not an option.” - Associated Press, Las Vegas Review Journal, 12/26/99 **************************************************** Let the Negative Campaigning Begin “Former Rep. John Ensign, R-Nev., who has been running (for the U.S. Senate) since March, has picked up $1.9 million for his campaign war chest. Ensign is receiving campaign support along the Las Vegas Strip, where his father, Mandalay Resort Group Chairman Mike Ensign, is a major player. In his latest fundraising letter, Ensign, a veterinarian, takes a shot at (Democrat opponent Edward M.) Bernstein’s profession. He writes: ‘Two thousand miles away last year, a very wealthy personal injury lawyer used his personal fortune to buy a seat in the U.S. Senate. The national Democrats are trying to repeat the pattern by recruiting a personal injury lawyer who will draw upon his personal wealth to try and buy Nevada’s seat in the Senate.’ ...(A) Bernstein campaign aide says the letter is a sign that Ensign is worried about his Democratic opponent. ‘For them to being going negative this early and attacking his profession shows those concerns,’ the aide says.” - Columnist Jeff German, Las Vegas SUN, 12/26/99 ***************************************** Help Spread the Word If you know someone who does not receive our FREE GOP News & Views briefings, send their e-mail address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Published by: Nevada Republican Liberty Caucus “The Conscience of the Republican Party” Chuck Muth, Chairman **COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
