Warning sounded to next US president
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE in Tokyo

The next US president must stick to a "one China" policy and make clear
Washington will never recognise Taiwan as a sovereign nation, Foreign
Minister Tang Jiaxuan said in an interview published yesterday.
"The Taiwan problem is the most difficult and challenging issue between the
United States and China," Mr Tang was quoted by the Sankei Shimbun as telling
Japanese journalists in Beijing.

"It is a major concern for us to see whether a new US president and his
subsequent administration will abide by the current policy and affirm US
standpoints" on Taiwan.

Bill Clinton leaves office in January 2001, with Republican contender George
W. Bush the frontrunner. Mr Bush recently defended Washington's "one China"
policy as well as Beijing's entrance to the World Trade Organisation.

Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to thwart independence for Taiwan.

Washington switched its diplomatic recognition of China from Taipei to
Beijing in 1979. Earlier this month, Mr Clinton reiterated his support of the
"one China" policy.

Sino-US relations soured in 1995 when Washington granted a visa to Taiwanese
President Lee Teng-hui to visit his alma mater, Cornell University.

Referring to Mr Lee's 1995 trip, Mr Tang said Japan should refrain from
allowing the President to visit.

"As for this issue, I want Japan not to tread the same path of the United
States," Mr Tang said.

"I believe the Japanese Government and Foreign Minister will take appropriate
measures against a plot by some Japanese who want to invite Lee as a private
citizen."

Mr Tang said other advances in Sino-US relations had to be seen with Taiwan
as the backdrop.

"The agreement on WTO benefited both China and the United States, but the
biggest issue lingering between the two countries is the Taiwan problem," Mr
Tang said.
