Religious Millennialists are like boxers. Most people think that boxers get
brain damage after some time in the ring. This is not the case at all. Boxers
are brain damaged BEFORE they even get into the ring. How do we know? Because
who else would choose to become a boxer?
Most people think that religious Millenialists are insane before and up to
the millennium. This is of course quite true. But when the millennium arrives
and nothing happens, we assume that they see reality and become sane again in
a miraculous cure. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some religionists
are only mildly afflicted and are able to rationalize away the failure of their
convictions to match what happens in the real world. Most religious people
are used to this condition and can rationalize it away. But for the " True
Believers," this doesn't work. These people then become candidates for * Post
Millennial Reflux." They are so emotionally invested in their psychotic
religious fantasies, that when their expectations don't come about, they must
create a catharsis. It is at this point AFTER the Millennial date passes that
these people become truly dangerous.
Who are these people? With the advent of the internet, we get an opportunity
to experience these loonies first hand. I am far too polite an individual to
point out Bard and Jah as good examples of what I'm talking about. Take Bard
for example ( please!). If you go back as much as six months ago, you can read
his postings and see that he is just a run of the mill uptight conservative sex
starved religious psychotic making brilliant moral judgments on the depraved
condition of society. But as we get closer to the Millennium, you can see that
he gets even more strident and intolerant as if metamorphosing into a " Fire
and Brimstone " preacher of the Pentecostal persuasion.
What will become of our poor insane religious psychos after tomorrow? Will they
be so disappointed in superstition that they will do harm to themselves or
others? Or will it be an opportunity for change and self improvement. Will he
and Jah find each other and take up residence in San Francisco and live happy
and productive lives as Chippendale groupies.
I wish you the best guys. And remember, stay away from skinheads and religious
freaks with baseball bats.
