-Caveat Lector- Dengue Fever Being Imported into Florida ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- WESTPORT, Dec 23 (Reuters Health) - Between 1997 and 1998, a newly implemented active surveillance program in Florida detected at least 18 cases of imported dengue fever. On average, only one to two cases per year had been found in the state during the previous 10 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Two mosquito vectors [for dengue fever] are widely distributed in Florida, and many infected travelers return from areas where dengue is endemic and the resident population has essentially no immunity to dengue viruses," according the CDC officials. They report that the 18 infected individuals ranged in age from 8 to 69 and had traveled to Haiti, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Barbados, Nicaragua or Thailand. The CDC researchers add that although all the patients had contracted the illness in other countries, the virus could be spread from infected travelers via mosquitoes in the US. "On the basis of the results of this study, surveillance efforts should be concentrated in countries with large populations and large numbers of international travelers and should intensify during dengue season (ie, July-November) in the Caribbean because of the large number of case-patients who travel to this area," according to the report. "Since there is no vaccine for dengue," CDC officials write, "travelers are urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing protective clothing and mosquito repellant."
