If you check out the history of Nicaragua, you'll find that a strange character named William Walker decided to colonize an area in Nicaragua before Panama was chosen for the site of the canal. A web search will turn up everything you could want to know about him. His colony was even recognized by Pres. Franklin Pierce. Keep in mind that George Bush's maternal ancestors were Walkers and that Barbara Bush is a descendant of Pierce. As it turns out, Brown Brothers, Harriman (the Walker family investment business) had significant financial interests in Nicaragua. Skull and Bonesman Henry Stimson spent much time there trying to sort out the issue. My thought is that if you thoroughly examined the bonds that were issued to finance the Panama Canal, you'd probably find they were paid off in 1999, and that's why the canal was abandoned. Now the financiers are wanting to issue new bonds, so they'll build a new canal and make millions more in fees on the new bonds. This is just a guess.
