-Caveat Lector-

Pennie, I think the problem here is that Nessie's terminology is slightly
off. What he means is *bibliolatry*, worship of a BOOK. Whether the Bible is
the Word of God is a matter of faith. My own interpretation--and that of my
faith community, BTW--is that JESUS is the Word of God. The Bible is the
*words* of God, as received by and filtered through many, many generations
of human beings. Belief in a supreme deity or deities seems to be a
universal human phenomenon--we are hardwired for religion; when, for
whatever reason, we find ourselves unable or unwilling to beleive directly
in God or gods, we tend to transfer that need for belief to "the
scriptures." You can find plenty of instances of people regarding the Bible,
or the Q'uran, or the Bhagavad Gita, or the Urantia book, or Volume 1 of
CAPITAL, or for that matter Merriam-Webster's Third Unabridged Dictionary of
the English Language, as itself divine and worthy of worship, rather than
being the earthly representation of divinely-imparted wisdom. The Bible in
and of itself has no salvific value. You cannot be saved SOLELY by reading
the Bible. Believing that such a thing is possible is purely and simply
"magical" thinking...and like all such thinking, it goes off in exactly the
wrong direction. God expects each of us to make up our own minds for
ourselves.
