Letterman Secret Service 'Threat' Not a First for Hillary Carl
Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

If staffers on the David Letterman Show threatened to sic the
Secret Service on any audience member who shouted or booed during
Hillary Clinton's "Late Show" debut, it wouldn't be the first
time something like that has happened.

An on-the-scene report swirling around the internet late
Wednesday claimed that Letterman staffers repeatedly warned the
audience beforehand, "Put your politics aside. This is a comedy
show -- no booing, no shouting. And if you don't listen to us you
can talk to the Secret Service."

The New York Daily News confirmed that Hillary's "Late Show"
audience was warned not to "boo, whistle or shout political
slogans," but omitted any mention of Secret Service connected
threats.

A "Late Show" press spokeswoman contacted Thursday by NewsMax.com
would say only that the Secret Service did not engage in any
overly intrusive security measures, such as pat down frisks or
metal detectors. But as to whether the audience was deliberately
intimidated to spare Mrs. Clinton any embarassment, she
respondeed, "I don't know what they were told. I wasn't out
there."

As outrageous as it may seem, reports of the Secret Service being
misused to shield Mrs. Clinton from embarassing media moments are
not new. During a fundraising swing though the Southwest in June
1996, for instance, The Arizona Republic reported a similar
incident:

"Reporters at the Monday afternoon speech were kept at arm's
length from the First Lady by Secret Service agents, who warned
the press not to yell out questions." Hours earlier, the Supreme
Court had rejected a White House bid to keep some of Mrs.
Clinton's Whitewater records sealed.

Incensed by the abuse of both the presidential security detail
and the First Amendment, Arizona Rep. Matt Salmon complained to
The Washington Times, "It appears (the President) has targeted
the Secret Service to silence his critics. The Secret Service is
paid to protect the President and his family from physical harm,
not to protect them from tough questions."

President Clinton has himself sicced the Secret Service on
critics he thought went too far.

Pat Mendoza, who was at the "Taste of Chicago" food fair in July
1996, was actually arrested along with her husband Glenn for
merely speaking her mind, albeit in a vulgar manner, as Clinton
attempted to shake her hand.

"You suck and those boys died," Mrs. Mendoza erupted, referring
to the still unsolved Khobar Towers bombing a month earlier,
which had taken the lives of 19 Marines stationed in Saudi
Arabia.

Then, according to Mrs. Mendoza's account to The Washington
Times, "Mr. Clinton looked at her for a moment, then motioned to
an assistant before moving down the line. After the President
left, Secret Servcie agents converged on Mrs. Mendoza, accusing
her of threatening the President."

Seconds before the Secret Service swooped down, a videotape shot
by Chicago's WMAQ-TV shows Clinton pointing out the Mendozas to
White House enforcer Bruce Lindsey. That video has never been
broadcast nationally.

After their arrest, the Mendozas spent 14 hours in a Cook County
lock-up. Though the Secret Service eventually dropped all
charges, the couple, who ran a small electronics business, was
soon audited by the Clinton IRS.
